Impressum checker: does your German website need a legal notice?

German law requires most commercial websites run from Germany to publish an Impressum: who runs the site and how to reach them quickly. ShipPatrol looks for one.

Why it matters

Section 5 of the German Digital Services Act (Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz, which replaced the old Telemediengesetz in May 2024) requires business websites to show the provider's name, address, a fast electronic contact including email, and register and VAT details where they exist. In Germany, competitors and associations send formal warning letters (Abmahnungen) for missing ones.

How Patch checks

We look for links called Impressum, Imprint or Legal notice and try /impressum. We only raise this when your business is in Germany, or when your site looks German and you haven't told us where you're based.

How to fix it

  1. Add an Impressum page with your full name or company name, legal form, postal address, email address and a second fast contact such as a phone number.
  2. Add your commercial register number and VAT ID if you have them.
  3. Link it from every page, usually in the footer, with the word "Impressum".

Your own report goes further: it names the exact pages, services and settings Patch found on your site, and with a full report you get a fix prompt to paste into Lovable, Bolt or Cursor.

Where this applies

Applies to commercial digital services run from Germany. Austria has a similar rule.
